Painting of light and airy periwinkle clouds whisking past rolling hills below.

Acrylic

12 x 12 Stretched Canvas

The multicolored sky background takes up the majority of the painting, the deeper, richer colors towards the top becoming lighter as they travel down toward the horizon. The different toned hills sit at the base, one a light almost lime green in the distance, a darker emerald green trailing the foreground. Although there are no obvious clouds to see, the swatches of color across the sky express the wind moving the shapes throughout the painting. Although the colors are vibrant there seems to be a lighter, airy sense to them, especially as you near the horizon where they appear almost pastel.

The two-toned hills hold the sky down as the wind seems to whisk it away. Lavender skies sweep in from the right, overtaking the typical shades of a blue sky. Launching from the hilltop a flock of birds could soar through the colorful sky, embracing the beauty as they fly.

I can’t say inspiration drove this piece because it was born out of a moment where I let go and simply enjoyed the process of mixing colors while I painted. My favorite way to start any painting is by adding colors to the canvas and mixing until I’ve discovered the perfect sky background. The hills were a way to ground the whimsy colors from above and add some balance to the painting.
